South Region: SDSU Advances To Second Weekend Over Furman

Providing the first major upset of the tournament Furman would meet San Diego State for a trip to the Sweet 16 on the line. From the South region here is a recap of how the Aztecs moved on.

1st Half

Furman began the scoring on the opening possession with a layup. From there the opening moments were pretty even kilter. The pace was right in the middle and not a lot of action took place. SDSU would have the advantage of the first timeout (6-8). The teams would continue to trade leads and by the time the next break came it was Furman who would be in the lead by one point. (13-12). Furman just (1-7) from three but SDSU wasn't much better with their (0-3) start from deep. This game was all about the defense and lack of offense to this point. Furman who started the game shooting (3-10) would go (4-6) over the following minutes and stay right with SDSU the first 10 minutes of action. As we approached the third media timeout the game was within four points the entire time. SDSU still holding serve up by two. SDSU shooting exactly 50% from the field (8-16). San Diego State would take advantage of Furman getting stuck on offense. As part of a 13-1 run the Aztecs were able to take the biggest lead of the game at the moment to (25-17). Out of the break it wouldn't stop there as the run just kept going. The lead got as high as 13 before Furman scored again. The double-digit lead would be the norm for the rest of the half. Leading by as many as 14 points in the final minute the halftime score would read SDSU 39 Furman 25. Micah Parrish went for 14 first half points off the bench for SDSU.

2nd Half

The Aztecs kept it up and owned the beginning minutes of the second half. Growing on their lead and doing much of the same to how they closed the opening half of play. Furman just couldn't find anything to drop and were just a (10-30) from the field. When the game finally broke again San Diego State was up by 19 points. The lead grew once again to 23 points, and it was clear that this game was pretty much a wrap. By the time the under eight-minute timeout rolled around in the game it was a 20-point game (64-44). Once San Diego State took their lead they didn't look back in this game. The energy from Furman just couldn't muster enough to make much a game late. San Deigo State would punch their ticket to the Sweet 16 with a (75-52) win.
