Arizona State Beats Out Nevada In First Four Shootout

The first four continued into Wednesday with more chances to get into the round of 64. This time it would be between Arizona State and Nevada as the two battled to be the 11 seed in the West to meet TCU. From what turned into quite the game here is a recap of the final first four game.

Hot start first half

This game took no time to get into gear and it was pure fun to watch. These two teams were letting it fly and it was from the very first basket of the game. Nevada opened the scoring with a three and then ASU responded by taking a (13-0) run to take a (13-3) leaf forcing the Pack to call a timeout. The run would continue, and the Sun Devils went out to a (25-12) lead. At the under 12 timeout ASU would be up 13 points and the teams shooting would read the teams a combined (8-12) from deep early on. The first 18 Nevada points were because of three-point field goals until they scored a two to bring the score to (31-20) at the 9:45 mark. Arizona State began (11-15) from the field. Arizona State from there just wouldn't miss. They would use a 22-2 run and would get out to a 29(!!) point lead with just over two minutes left in the half. It was insanity the Sun Devils were shooting 71%(!!!) a whole (20-28) on field goals (8-12) from deep in that span. The Wolfpack didn't even have a chance to respond shooting a staggering 31%. The wealth was spread but the 11-point start for DJ Horne who was (3-3) himself from range would lead the path in the opening stanza. The Halftime score would read ASU 53 Nevada 26.

2nd half

Arizona State came out right from where they left off and hit a three pointer to begin the second half of action. The Wolfpack would try to respond and would pull within 21 points at the first media timeout of the second half. The game would settle in as Nevada was comfortably behind by 20 plus point for the beginning half of the final twenty minutes. The Sun Devils just kept scoring and with 10:27 remaining in the game the score read Arizona State 73 Nevada 53. Cambridge and Horne would be leading the way to this point with 17 and 16 points to the 73-point tally to that point. Nevada was fueled by Will Baker to keep them within some form of reach. ASU would hold the Wolfpack at bay as the lead would stay consistent with by the next stoppage of play the score was (81-60) in favor of the Sun Devils. Come to the final media timeout the Sun Devil lead remained at 21. The Sun Devils would leave no doubt on this game, when you're up by 20 points for a majority of minutes you did something right. ASU would finish (35-55) from the field.

Closing

Hurley will join his brother in the round of 64 as ASU gets the job done in the first four in Dayton Ohio closing out the first two days of action. This was just the Sun Devils night as they couldn't miss. When you shoot 65% in the first half it is hard to coo down enough to bring the game within reach. The leading scorers were Horne with 20, Cambridge 17, and the Devan Cambridge with 15. Sun Devils move on to TCU.
